Title:
Author: PC & Kristin Cast
Genre: Paranormal YA
Rating: ★★★(but only because I'm going to continue to read the series hoping this was just a stumble in an otherwise great series. On its own, this book was more like a 1-2 star)
Back Cover (from Amazon):
So…you’d think after banishing an immortal being and a fallen High Priestess, saving Stark’s life, biting Heath, getting a headache from Erik, and almost dying, Zoey Redbird would catch a break. Sadly, a break is not in the House of Night school forecast for the High Priestess in training and her gang. Juggling three guys is anything but a stress reliever, especially when one of them is a sexy Warrior who is so into protecting Zoey that he can sense her emotions. Speaking of stress, the dark force lurking in the tunnels under the Tulsa Depot is spreading, and Zoey is beginning to believe Stevie Rae could be responsible for a lot more than a group of misfit red fledglings. Aphrodite’s visions warn Zoey to stay away from Kalona and his dark allure, but they also show that it is Zoey who has the power to stop the evil immortal. Soon it becomes obvious that Zoey has no choice: if she doesn’t go to Kalona he will exact a fiery vengeance on those closest to her. Will Zoey have the courage to chance losing her life, her heart, and her soul?
REVIEW:
First, I would like to say that I ♥ this series. I recommended it here. I pre-ordered this book and had it delivered the day it was released. So I'm a fan. However, I will say that this book was a bit of a disappointment.
Things that rocked:
- Unlike the previous books, this one used alternate third person POVs in chapters in addition to Zoey's first person POV chapters. I enjoyed the break from the first person view and hearing the thoughts of a number of important characters. My fave POVs: Aphrodite and Heath.
- The introduction of a sympathetic Raven Mocker. I love when evil guys get a rounded personality.
- Aphrodite and Darius--I have really come to enjoy the Aphrodite character who has grown from one dimensional mean girl into a well-developed character that offers comic relief. Plus, Darius, her warrior boyfriend, is so cute dealing with her.
Sour notes:
- Hardly anything actually happened in the book--where was the action? It seemed like a lot of moving around from place to place to have conversations.
- Erik--I used to love his character then all of a sudden in the last book, he became a jerk and continued that into this book. The switch was not adequately motivated IMO and didn't seem believable. It felt like the authors were just trying to rid Zoey of one of her many boyfriends and not have us feel bad about it as readers.
- The euphemisms for curse words--please stop! I don't know many teens who say bullpoopie in life or death situations. It's not like the Cast's have issues with cursing because other characters use profanity--including the f-word used in its truest sense. And I don't need Zoey to curse, but don't put in a silly placeholder, just say it without the word at all.
- The references to movies and books were abundant and pulled me from the story, screaming "An adult author is writing this!!!" I don't mind one reference here or there, but they were all over the place, blatant, and not necessary to the plot. For instance, in one scene the MC wakes up to find the other characters crying because they are watching the movie Milk. It had nothing to do with anything except telling the reader--hey I (the author) liked this movie, go rent it.
- Romance was almost nil and that's the part I've enjoyed about these books the most. Zoey kinda sorta love/likes both men in her life and is attracted to the bad guy as well but no progress was really made in any relationship.
- Many of the secondary characters were just along for the ride in this book to throw in a comment here or there.
- The cast of characters is huge now with the original blue fledglings, the additional blue fledglings that fought the bad guys, the good red vamps and the bad red vamps. In some scenes, it was just too much to keep track.
- I'm a little over the Stevie Ray story thread. It may get more interesting, but most of the time I felt like skipping past her chapters.
- I miss the House of Night--hardly any of the book took place there.
- The ending was rushed and a total cliffhanger, not even a little wrap up.
Overall:
I'll be honest, through this whole book, I was telling myself: this is my last one, the story has run its course, they are milking it, I've lost interest, blah blah blah. Then the last few pages, this big thing happened, which I will not say because I don't want to post spoilers, but it made me want to know what happens. Damn them!
So I will wait for the next installment in April 2010, Burned, and hope that the books return to greatness. This did happen in Charlaine Harris' Sookie series with one book (book 8 or 9, can't remember) where nothing happened and it was just one big plot bridge then the next book blew my socks off, so there is still hope!
So if you are a fan of this series, you'll probably want to read this--although had I known about the ending, I may have waited to read this one until the next one was already out. If you haven't read this series, I do suggest picking it up. Outside of this installment, the other books were really enjoyable. :)
So how about you guys? Anyone out there reading this series? What did you think of this installment? Have you ever read a series where one book just meandered along aimlessly, but later books got back on track?
